Give your physical and mental health a boost during Student Well-being Week

From 11 till 15 November, Leiden University is holding the Student Well-being Week. A week full of activities intended to help you relax, develop yourself personally, and meet fellow students.

Join in the many free activities such as RoCycle, music bingo, a seminar on climate stress, or our game cafés. Or maybe you would prefer a workshop on improving your sleep or dealing with peer pressure? And don’t forget the relaxing nature walks and breathwork sessions. With over 30 sessions to choose from, there’s something for everyone.


Registration for the activities will open on 28 October. You can register via this page from that date. 

Help the whole year round

Did you know that we are also here to support you the whole year round? Whether you want to speak to a student psychologist, join a support group, improve your career prospects with the help of the careers services, or get to work with online self-help modules. Programme

Monday 11 November

Power yoga is a vigorous, dynamic form of yoga that both strengthens and relaxes your muscles. It combines traditional poses with intense movements, all the time focusing on good posture and breathing. Physical exertion is followed by a relaxation phase which contributes to inner peace and stress reduction. Power yoga is ideal for those seeking an energetic workout combined with mental calm.

Looking for a fun way to meet new people? Join our activity! Discover fun facts about each other and then make a unique bracelet tailored to your new friend. Choose colours and symbols that suit the person and create a lasting memory.

This vitality session will boost your energy through mindful breathing. Whether you are looking for more focus, less stress, or simply want to feel more connected, this session has everything you need.

You will learn meditative techniques and energising breathing exercises that you can easily use in your daily life - at home, at school, or at work. The programme can also be adapted to include interactive “connection” exercises to help you to reconnect with yourself.

You will feel more balanced, clear-headed, and connected with those around you.

This workshop is intended for anyone interested in learning to draw.

Leiden is the birthplace of the artist Rembrandt van Rijn. In this workshop you will draw a self-portrait of Rembrandt. With a few simple techniques you’ll create a drawing in the style of the old masters. During the workshop we will use basic techniques such as tonality and composition. Surprise yourself and join in!

Want to eat something different on Monday evening? Then why not cook your favorite dish and join us for a fun evening of meeting other students and sharing your culinary creations. Our potluck dinner is the perfect opportunity to connect with new people. If you prefer, you are also welcome to bring along a small snack to share with others instead.

Tuesday 12 November

In this workshop you will find out why some people have trouble sleeping. We will also discuss common myths about sleep and find out how sleep works. You can also pick up tips on how to improve your sleep and try out exercises aimed at sleeping well. Sweet dreams.

Enjoy the colours of autumn and get to know yourself better during our Wellness Walk. Walking in natural surroundings relaxes the mind, boosts your energy and stimulates creativity.

This Wellness Walk focuses on personal growth, mindfulness and getting to know other students. Marlies from Nature Academy will take you outdoors and let you try some simple assignments aimed at promoting self-reflection and growth. We will meet up outside the Albert Heijn to Go at the train station, then walk through the Haagse Bos.

In the mood for hot chocolate? Rather play games than study in the library? We completely agree. Drop by the Humanities Living Room where a free chocolate milk bar awaits you. Enjoy something sweet, play a few games, and enjoy the cozy atmosphere. Let's take some time for ourselves and embrace the moment. Take a break - you deserve it. Registration is not required.

Sign up for this social, fun run with the Wijnhavenrunners. Meet other students, put on your running shoes and get ready for a lap of The Hague. No prior running experience is necessary. There’s something for every level.

Are you worried about climate change? During this lecture on climate stress, we will discuss the impact of climate change on mental health. How can you deal with feelings of fear and helplessness? Discover practical tips and strategies to reduce stress and build resilience. Join us to learn how to keep growing mentally in a changing world.

Plants are good for your mental health and growing plants can give you a sense of pride. Especially if you manage to grow them from cuttings. During this afternoon of swapping plant cuttings, you can extend your plant family whilst making other people happy with your own cuttings. There will also be time to exchange plant tips and meet other students.

Bringing your own plant cutting is preferred but not compulsory. There will also be a few cuttings available from the Hortus. Hortus staff will be on hand to answer any questions and give tips on plant cuttings.

Dancing is an ideal way to relax after a hard day of studying. It’s also a great way to get your creative energy flowing. And what better way to meet new people? During this Salsa class you’ll dance individually or in pairs. Salsa is good for your flexibility, improves coordination, and gets you working on your sense of rhythm. All this to the sound of upbeat Latin music.

Are you ready for an unforgettable musical experience? 🎶

Come to an evening of music bingo in the nicest cafe in Leiden: De Kroeg. A unique combination of bingo and live music with pianist-entertainer Guus van Marwijk. Your first drink (non-alcoholic) is on the house. P.S. Don't forget to bring along your best singing voice.

Thursday 14 November

High Intensity Interval Training and powerful explosive movements are alternated with short breaks. This is an outdoor full-body workout. Strengthen your core, improve your fitness and have fun.

This workshop highlights all aspects: how to study properly, how to organize your time properly, how to tackle exams skillfully and how to keep stress at a healthy level.

Friday 15 November

Do you love parties and festivals? Then this is the workout for you. The Sclpt tubes (BRN/ XCO tubes) will help you work on your upper body and abdomen, the bike will shape your buttocks and legs, and the great beats will ensure a party atmosphere. During a Rocycle session, the cycle zone feels like one big dance floor. Time will fly by as you burn calories with a smile on your face.

A unique combination of mental and physical self-defense techniques based on the JUNO philosophy Aware - Prevent - Action.

For anyone who wants to become more aware of their own personal safety capabilities.

Join LUGO for a workshop on making sustainable candles from beeswax. These candles are 100% biodegradable and smell great too. Let's combine mental health and sustainability in this relaxing session on DIY candle making. Please bring your own mug, pot, or heat-resistant cup to put your candle in and we'll take care of the rest. See you there.

Always wanted to find out if bouldering is something for you? At Boulderhal Walhalla you can try out the sport in a fun, safe environment. After a10 minute introduction you can go bouldering on your own. It doesn't matter if you're a regular gym visitor or have just started exercising. Bouldering is an accessible activity, which is what makes it so much fun.
