Nieuwsuur heeft een nieuwsitem gewijd aan de veiligheid in de Nederlandse gevangenissen en aan het feit dat er steeds minder gevangenen zijn in Nederland. Aan dit item wordt ook een bijdrage geleverd door Joni Reef, criminoloog bij het Instituut voor Strafrecht & Criminologie.

Ondanks diverse initiatieven blijkt het niet eenvoudig om gedetineerden terug de arbeidsmarkt op te krijgen.

Universitair docent Joni Reef vertelde in een radiouitzending van Sleutelstad FM over zorgconferenties, een nieuw fenomeen in het behandeltraject voor tbs-patiënten.

In de afgelopen 20 jaar nam de veelvoorkomende criminaliteit overal ter wereld af, behalve in landen waar armoede heerst, de gezinnen groot zijn en die geteisterd zijn door burgeroorlogen. Dat toont een studie die de veiligheid van 166 landen met elkaar vergelijkt.

De detentie van een ouder heeft grote invloed op kinderen. Daarom krijgen de penitentiaire inrichtingen in Leeuwarden en Veenhuizen een speciale ‘vadervleugel’. Dit is een plek waar vaders hun kinderen kunnen zien en zo meer betrokken kunnen blijven bij hun gezin.

Gedetineerde vaders in de penitentiaire inrichting in Alphen aan den Rijn hebben een boek geschreven met verhalen voor hun kinderen, die ze maar weinig zien. 'Een goed initiatief, zegt universitair docent criminologie Joni Reef.
