Het opleggen van een straf wordt voor rechters steeds ingewikkelder. Leidse juristen en criminologen brengen in kaart hoe strafoplegging in Nederland verloopt. Met die kennis adviseren ze wetgever en uitvoerders om strafoplegging consistenter en effectiever te maken.

Voor het eerst is onderzocht hoe de gezondheid van gedetineerden voorafgaand aan de detentie verschilt van niet-gedetineerden en in welke mate de gezondheidsproblemen veranderen over de tijd: van vóór naar ná de detentieperiode.

De detentie van een ouder heeft grote invloed op kinderen. Daarom krijgen de penitentiaire inrichtingen in Leeuwarden en Veenhuizen een speciale ‘vadervleugel’. Dit is een plek waar vaders hun kinderen kunnen zien en zo meer betrokken kunnen blijven bij hun gezin.

Welke rol spelen stress en angst bij de vorming van nocebo hyperalgesie?

Onderzoek dat binnen het instituut wordt uitgevoerd valt onder het onderzoeksprogramma Criminal Justice: Legitimacy, Accountability and Effectivity. In dit onderzoeksprogramma werken (strafrecht)juristen en sociaal wetenschappers, in het bijzonder criminologen, nauw samen.

Een perspectief, een cel, een levensopvatting: waarin kunnen we wel allemaal niet gevangen zitten? Dit is de vraag die Vrij Nederland stelde aan verschillende experts, waaronder universitair docent en research fellow bij de afdeling Criminologie, Joni Reef.
