Why the budget cuts are disastrous according to our Dean

On November 14th, our academic community came together in a powerful display of solidarity against the proposed budget cuts to higher education. After the cancellation of the national protest in Utrecht, alternative demonstrations were held in Leiden and The Hague, with the full support of Leiden University. These actions, organized by WOinActie, saw a strong turnout from our Faculty of Social Sciences – including the Faculty Board.
The social sciences are at the forefront of addressing our society's most pressing challenges. Our research and education foster innovation, enhance the Netherlands' international competitive position, and provide crucial insights for tackling complex societal issues. From shaping effective climate change policies to understanding the intricacies of human behavior in the digital age, social sciences are indispensable in crafting solutions for a better future. The social sciences equip students with critical thinking skills essential for navigating an increasingly complex world. We play a vital role in promoting social mobility and creating a more equitable society. Our international students bring diverse perspectives and contribute significantly to our economy and cultural richness.
This is why we are calling on Minister Bruins to reconsider the proposed budget cuts for higher education.
