Samuel Issy Rubinstein wint Fruinprijs 2024
Er worden veel goede afstudeerscripties geschreven door de studenten die hun Leidse geschiedenisopleiding ermee afronden. Alleen de allerbeste scripties worden voorgedragen voor de Fruinprijs: de jaarlijkse prijs voor de beste onderzoeksmaster-, master- of Europaeumscriptie van de Opleiding Geschiedenis.
In de aanwezigheid van een volle zaal eerstejaars geschiedenisstudenten en de docenten van de opleiding Geschiedenis werd op 3 september de Fruinprijs 2024 uitgereikt. De jury van de Fruinprijs bestond dit jaar uit Bart Verheijen (voorzitter), Philippe Buc en Liesbeth Claes. Zij zijn in de gelegenheid geweest om de beste scripties van deze opleiding te lezen en te beoordelen.
In willekeurige volgorde staan hieronder de negen nominaties van dit jaar:

- Daiana Veronesi - Greek Ancient Rituals and Ritual Dynamics Through an Embodied-Cognitive Perspective (begeleider Kim Beerden)
- Amber Peut - Untouched by the whims of fashion? Ottoman representation in early modern European costume books (1550-1800) (begeleider Jos Gommans)
- Titus Stam - Red Laboratory. Municipal Socialism in Amsterdam in Comparative Perspective (1914-1940) (begeleider Dennis Bos)
- Mary Frances Cramer - (In)visible parents? An analysis of the representation of same-gender parenthood in Dutch parenting magazines and the Dutch gay/lesbian press 1970-2010 (begeleider Evelien Walhout)
- Dimitra Maragkozoglou - Women’s labor force participation in interwar Greece: The case of Athens and Piraeus (1917-1930) (begeleider Ariadne Schmidt)
- Samuel Issy Rubinstein- ‘Hitler’s Thucydides’. Percy Ernst Schramm as Nazi Historian and Historian of Nazism (begeleider Herman Paul)
- Donato Finelli- The bridge that the Netherlands built. The Netherlands, Great Britain, and questions on European integration during the 1980s (begeleider Joost Augusteijn)
- Vicente Rodrigues - Living Among The Graves: The Cult of the Dead from Rome to Donatist Africa (begeleider Jürgen Zangenberg)
Ook dit jaar was de jury weer onder de indruk van het enthousiasme van de studenten, de hoge kwaliteit van de analyse en van het brongebruik. De winnaar van de Fruinprijs 2024 werd Samuel Issy Rubinstein. Hij wint, naast eeuwige roem, een geldbedrag van 750 euro. Omdat de winnaar Engelstalig is, werd de volgende laudatio in het Engels uitgesproken:
‘Samuel has written a beautiful intellectual biography of the historian Percy Schramm, who during the years of National Socialism was tempted to become a National Socialist himself. He was not the only academic who made his choice; the most well-known example is perhaps the philosopher Martin Heidegger. But others also found the allure of National Socialism too great to resist. Why could they not withstand National Socialism, why did they also became 'willing executioners' of the Nazi-ideology? In his thesis, Samuel tries to understand Schramm's political choice through his historical publications: those on medieval kings, but also those on the 19th century. Do we see traces here of National Socialist ideology seeping out through his historical works? After the war, Schramm felt guilty about his choices and tried to make his fellow Germans aware of the great mistakes they had made. He sought to help them understand the person Hitler, even though he had not known him personally. In his thesis, by following Schramm's intellectual development, Samuel manages to paint a nuanced picture of his Nazi sympathies. This portrayal of Schramm is written in an engaging style, blending historical research that sometimes reads like a historical novel. It goes beyond a descriptive and chronological bibliography of Schramm, using a holistic method to place and interpret him in his historical context.
The result is a very compelling and beautifully told story, drawing from numerous sources from various archives. It is an intellectual biography of a fascinating person, truly exemplary!’
De jury geeft daarnaast ook een eervolle vermelding aan Vicente Rodrigues voor zijn scriptie.
Over de Fruinprijs
Sinds 1989 wordt de jaarlijkse Fruinprijs uitgereikt aan de beste geschiedenisscriptie van de Universiteit Leiden. De prijs bestaat uit een oorkonde, een bos bloemen en een geldbedrag. Robert Fruin, naamgever van de prijs, was de eerste hoogleraar Vaderlandse Geschiedenis aan de Universiteit Leiden. Hij wordt gezien als een van de grondleggers van de geschiedwetenschap in Nederland.
