Wil je nieuwe studenten helpen een vliegende start te maken? Word studentmentor!

4 juni 2024

We are looking for student mentors (research) master programme.

Win-win! As the Faculty of Archeology, we want our new students to feel integrated in our student community and supported by their programme. To do this we want to give you the opportunity to gain experience in guiding, supporting and motivating a group. We are looking for enthusiastic and engaged student mentors (2 to 6 hours per week) that would like to introduce our new master students to the world of the university, the faculty, their studies, and Leiden

Is this you?

You're an (upcoming) second- or higher year (research)master student Archeology. You like to help others and you support the university's values of inclusivity and diversity. You have strong communicative, motivational and organizational skills (online and offline) and you know how to make people feel welcome.

What will you do?

You will guide one or more groups of students and you will be the first point of contact for your mentees. You will refer them to someone else if needed. Besides that, you help them to get familiar with the faculty and studying. To do this you will be:

  • Organising and planning the mentor group meetings;
  • Preparing and chairing these meetings;
  • Answering practical questions from your mentees;
  • Supporting your mentor group with connecting with the programme and faculty;
  • Attending guided peer to peer coaching sessions with the study advisers/career adviser.

What's in it for you?

We offer you the opportunity to gain experience in coaching, organisational skills, mentoring a group, and gaining insight in the organisation of the Faculty of Archaeology.

Furthermore:

  • Before the start, you will attend a training program that teaches you important skills to work with a group (dealing with resistance, group dynamics, active bystanding, etc.);
  • As a student mentor you'll get guidance from study advisers and career adviser through guided peer to peer coaching sessions;
  • You will have access to the network of student mentors that support each other;
  • Compensation of around 15 or 16 euros per hour (Depending on whether you are a bachelor student or master student, according to the collective labor agreement of Leiden University, including vacation and December benefits).

Depending on the amount of groups you are guiding, we will decide for how many hours you will get a contract for. It will take roughly 2 hours per group per week (on average, some weeks will be busier than others).

Practical

  • Applications can be sent until Monday 22-06-2024
  • You're available between 26 August 2024 and 1 February 2025. The introductory training program will be held during the week of 28 August, partly on location, partly online.
  • You have a valid work permit in The Netherlands or the possibility to get it (if applicable).

Want to apply or do you have questions?

Send your questions or application to Cleody van der Eijk, Study Adviser and Exchange coordinator, viastudyadvisers@arch.leidenuniv.nl. Send us your resume and a short motivation (deadline Monday 22 June) in which you introduce yourself, why you would like to be a student mentor and what you think is most important for new students to feel welcome and empowered.
