In the MA specialisation Language diversity of Africa, Asia and Native America you will discover how linguistics structures of various world languages spoken outside Europe and Asia differ vastly from Indo-European languages.
This programme is taught by experts who regularly carry out research in Africa, Asia and the Americas. You will benefit from their knowledge of and experience with the many interesting features of each region. They will lead you through an array of topics, ranging from how the perspective of the speaker determines the structure of sentences in languages of the Americas, the function of serial verb constructions in Africa to the structure of numeral systems in Asia.
While you experience how these languages revolutionize our ideas about what is universal in language, you will learn how to compare and evaluate key research directions in descriptive linguistics, ultimately equipping you with the insights and skills required to carry out independent research. The insights you gain and tools you acquire in this programme give you a solid basis for further studies. This programme opens startling new perspectives on the immense linguistic diversity still found in the world.
