Course and exam enrolment
Compulsory for all components
You must enrol for all components of your study programme, such as lectures, seminars and exams. This applies to both compulsory elements and elective credits. If you are not enrolled, you may not participate.
Exceptions
Are you an exchange student, are you following a pre-master programme, or are you following courses whilst being registered at another Dutch university? If so, different enrolment procedures apply. You will receive further information by email.
Plan and enrol via MyStudymap
You can enrol via MyStudymap. In this system you can also plan your enrolments in advance. This means you can plan everything in your own time, then submit all your course enrolments in one go at the start of the enrolment period. Please note: your enrolment plan is not an actual enrolment and does not guarantee you a place.
How does it work?

Enrolment deadlines
Courses
You can find the enrolment deadlines for each course in the prospectus. For most courses, you can enrol till maximum 5 days before the course is due to start.
Exams
You must enrol for your exams at least 10 days before the exam date. If you are not enrolled, you may not participate. So don’t forget! If you miss the exam enrolment deadline, contact your Education Administration Office to find out if late enrolment is possible.
Busy periods: ticket system
During busy periods, MyStudymap makes use of a ticket system to prevent the system becoming overloaded. This works as follows:
- When you access MyStudymap, you will be put on a waiting list. You can see your place on the waiting list and an estimate of how long you will have to wait. You can also set up an email alert to notify you when it's your turn.
- Once it's your turn, you will have ten minutes in which to log in. If you don't log in, you will be allocated a new place on the waiting list.
- Once you are logged in, you can go ahead with your planning and enrolment.
Status of your enrolments
On the status screen in MyStudymap you can see if your enrolment has been successful. If so, you will be given access to the course environment in Brightspace and the course will appear in your personal timetable in MyTimetable. Please note: it can become very busy at the start of the enrolment period so you may have to wait until the next day for your enrolment to be processed.

Enrolling for Courses via MyStudyMap
MyStudyMap
For lectures, tutorials and exams you have to register in time via MyStudymap. Not being registered for a course can mean that you are not allowed to participate in the final exams of the course.
If you see the code 101 on an exam, it refers to the regular exam. If it says 901 then it refers to a retake. 501 refers to a non-graded test.
If there are more groups these numbers could be 101, 102 etc.
Exceptions
All students are required to register for all lectures, tutorials and exams. Exceptions are:
- First-year students: As a new first-year student you do not have to register for the courses (and components) of the first semester. This is done for you by the student administration (SSA).For a retake you can do the registration yourself in MyStudyMap.
- Students following the program bachelor LST: For LST students, registration is done via the Delft system.
- Master students: There is no pre-registration for Master Courses. Registration is still required, but not yet before the start of a course. Note: registration for exams is required, though
- Minor: For the courses and activities that are part of the minor program, you will be registered, after being assigned by the programme, in cooperation with the student administration. This applies to the FWN-minors. If the Minor is visible in MyStudyMap you can register for retakes yourself.
- Premaster: You must register for the courses you must follow in uSis with classnumbers.
- Guest Students with Proof of Paid Tuition Fees: You must register for the courses you must follow in uSis with classnumbers.
Planning your study
Before the registration period opens, you can plan your studies for the coming semester in MyStudymap. From this planning you can register for all courses at once when registration starts. Read more about the difference between planning and enrolling.
Note on abbreviations in MyStudyMap (uSis)

Enrollment in courses and exams in MyStudyMap
To participate in courses and exams, it is essential that you enroll on time via MyStudyMap. This is mandatory for all course components and exams. Without enrollment, you won’t have access to the course on Brightspace and won’t be able to participate in exams. Only first-year bachelor’s students are automatically enrolled in courses and exams for their first semester. However, keep in mind that they must enroll themselves for any retakes.
How do I enroll?
There are two ways to enroll, depending on your student status:
-
Regular Students: Enroll via MyStudyMap. Ensure your enrollment is complete by submitting your course plan through the 'Ready for Enrollment' tab and clicking 'Submit'. From the second semester onward, all first-year students must enroll themselves for all courses and exams, including retakes.
Watch this short video to see step-by-step instructions on how to enroll in courses via MyStudyMap.
-
Guest Students, Exchange Students, and Pre-Master Students: Enroll via uSis. Detailed instructions are available on the student website under the 'Mathematics and Natural Sciences' tab. You can also watch this instructional video.
For more information about MyStudyMap, check the MyStudyMap support page.
Planning your study
Before the registration period opens, you can plan your studies for the coming semester in MyStudymap. From this planning you can register for all courses at once when registration starts. Read more about the difference between planning and enrolling.
Note on abbreviations in MyStudyMap (uSis)

catalogue no. + W = Workgroup or labwork (LAB)
catalogue no. + T = Exam or retake (TEN)
catalogue no. + X = Other assessment method (paper, groupwork) (OVG)
Registering for lectures, tutorials and exams
For lectures, tutorials and exams you have to register in time via MyStudymap. Not being registered for a course can mean that you are not allowed to participate in the final exams of the course. By registering for an exam, you receive a so-called preregistration. You must confirm your participation in an exam in the student portal between thirty and ten days before the exam takes place. You will be notified of this. If you do not confirm your participation in time, you cannot participate in the exam.
If you see the code 101 on an exam, it refers to the regular exam. If it says 901 then it refers to a retake. 501 refers to a non-graded test.
If there are more groups these numbers could be 101, 102 etc.
If you are late with enrollment via MyStudyMap, you must contact the Science Student Administration (SSA) via the late enrollment form. Late enrollment is possible under the following conditions:
- Courses: Always possible via the form.
- Exams: Up to 5 days before the exam and only for exceptional personal reasons or technical issues with MyStudyMap.
- Retakes: No late enrollment possible. Contact the study advisor.
- If you have questions about planning and enrollment via MyStudyMap, check the explanation and FAQs.
- For technical issues with logging in or enrolling in MyStudyMap, contact the helpdesk.
- For content-related questions about planning, enrollment, or your study program, contact the education coordinator (onderwijscoordinator@strw.leidenuniv.nl) and/or study advisor (studyadvisor@strw.leidenuniv.nl).
- For questions about your study progress or if you need a personal conversation, contact your study advisor (studyadvisor@strw.leidenuniv.nl).
Pay attention to the enrollment deadlines in MyStudyMap:
- Course (lecture, workgroup): Enrollment starts from the 2nd week of July (semester 1) or the 2nd week of December (semester 2). There is no deadline.
- Lab Course: Enrollment starts from the 2nd week of July (semester 1) or the 2nd week of December (semester 2). The deadline is 28 days before the start of the course at 23:59.
- Exam or test: Enrollment starts from the 2nd week of July (semester 1) or the 2nd week of December (semester 2). The deadline is 10 days before the exam at 23:59.
- Retake: Enrollment starts 30 days before the retake. The deadline is 5 days before the retake at 23:59.
Timely enrolment for study activities is your own responsibility. Failing to enrol or to cancel your enrolment in time will have consequences. If you do not enrol before the closure date, your grade will not be registered. Failing to cancel your enrolment, your chance for the exam will be considered as used. Please note that resits always require separate enrolment.
According to article 4.6.4. of the Rules and Regulations of the Examination Committee, deviations from the procedures for enrolment as described on this page can be imposed or allowed. More information on this can be found in the Examination Protocol Physics & Astronomy (in Dutch).
Students following a double bachelor's programme should submit the request at the Board of Examiners of their programme of first registration.
