Course and exam enrolment
Are you a visiting exchange student? In most cases, you do not need to enrol on courses yourself. Your faculty will do this for you. Click on your Exchange - Faculty tab for details.
Compulsory for all components
You must enrol for all components of your study programme, such as lectures, seminars and exams. This applies to both compulsory elements and elective credits. If you are not enrolled, you may not participate.
Exceptions
Are you an exchange student, are you following a pre-master programme, or are you following courses whilst being registered at another Dutch university? If so, different enrolment procedures apply. You will receive further information by email. Or for exchange students, see the information on your Exchange - Faculty tab.
Plan and enrol via MyStudymap
You can enrol via MyStudymap. In this system you can also plan your enrolments in advance. This means you can plan everything in your own time, then submit all your course enrolments in one go at the start of the enrolment period. Please note: your enrolment plan is not an actual enrolment and does not guarantee you a place.

Enrolment deadlines
Courses
You can find the enrolment deadlines for each course in the prospectus. For most courses, you can enrol till maximum 5 days before the course is due to start.
Exams
You must enrol for your exams at least 10 days before the exam date. If you are not enrolled, you may not participate. So don’t forget! If you miss the exam enrolment deadline, contact your Education Administration Office to find out if late enrolment is possible.
Busy periods: ticket system
During busy periods, MyStudymap makes use of a ticket system to prevent the system becoming overloaded. This works as follows:
- When you access MyStudymap, you will be put on a waiting list. You can see your place on the waiting list and an estimate of how long you will have to wait. You can also set up an email alert to notify you when it's your turn.
- Once it's your turn, you will have ten minutes in which to log in. If you don't log in, you will be allocated a new place on the waiting list.
- Once you are logged in, you can go ahead with your planning and enrolment.
Status of your enrolments
On the status screen in MyStudymap you can see if your enrolment has been successful. If so, you will be given access to the course environment in Brightspace and the course will appear in your personal timetable in MyTimetable. Please note: it can become very busy at the start of the enrolment period so you may have to wait until the next day for your enrolment to be processed.

The enrolment protocol describes the conditions and deadlines relating to the process of enrolment for courses within Leiden University by bachelor's and master's students.
According article 3.4.1.3 of the Course and Examination Regulations and approved by the Faculty Board, the following deadlines are set for all courses of the Faculty of Law.

From the 9th day up to and including the 6th day before the date of the exam, you can submit a request for late registration for an exam via this link. Make sure you fill out the form with the correct data. If we receive incorrect information, we cannot process your request and can therefore not enroll you for the exam. Submitting a request for late registration is no guarantee for an actual enrollment as it regards a leniency policy. If you can be enrolled for the exam, OIC will send you a confirmation email. Please note that no additional exam facilities (additional time, laptop etc.) will be arranged when using the leniency policy. After day 6, you are really too late to enroll in the exam, the OIC can no longer help you.
In the future, make sure that you register for a exam no later than 10 calendar days before the exam date.
Note 1: The registration procedure in MyStudymap is NOT for a Guest student (registered at another Dutch University), who want to take one or more (minor)courses at Leiden University. They have to follow the procedure at 'Guest students'.
Note 2: Students of LLM Advanced study programmes are not required to register for courses.
Planning courses and exams
- Log in to MyStudymap
- In case of problems with your account check here.
- Open your Study Plan. Here you can see your programme for the first and second semester and which courses you (still) have to follow.
- Check the course descriptions and the methods of instruction in the Prospectus;
- At each course you want to follow:
- Select one or more study activities/tutorials for which you want to enrol.
Exams are shown as 'TEN' for example TEN 11X. Retakes are shown as 'HER' for example HER 91X. - Note: The date and time listed are for the first tutorial meeting only! So it can be a different time each week and/or there can be several meetings per week.
- Press ‘save’.
- For planning elective and minor courses you can add the courses from the prospectus to your study planning in ‘Electives / extra curriculair’.
- It is not possible yet to enrol for a retake. The registration for retakes opens 30 days before the day of the retake.
- Select one or more study activities/tutorials for which you want to enrol.
- After selecting your study activities/tutorials check your schedule by pressing ‘Schedule’ at the top of the page.
- The weeks in which activities overlap are marked with a red dot.
- You can return to your Study Planning to make changes.
- After verifying your study activities/tutorials, you have to submit your enrolment. You can do this by selecting the tab Ready to submit.
- You have made your schedule in concept. You did not submit your enrolments yet.
- Please note: your enrolment plan is not an actual enrolment and does not guarantee you a place in the chosen tutorial.
- Medio July/December, it is possible to actually submit your enrolments via MyStudymap.

Submitting your enrolments
Medio July/December it is possible to actually submit your enrolments in MyStudymap. During busy periods, MyStudymap makes use of a ticket system to prevent the system from becoming overloaded. Check tab ‘General’ for more information.
NOTE:
- You are not enrolled for the planned activities until you have completed the entire process outlined below.
- In order to have access to a course in Brightspace you will have to be enrolled for at least one activity of a course.
- Log in to MyStudymap
- In case of problems with your account check here.
- You can verify the activities you scheduled by selecting the tab Ready to submit.
- Submit your enrolments by selecting Send in the bottom right corner.
- It may take a while for your enrolments to be completed. Check the tab enrolment status.
- If your enrolment is still being processed, select ‘Refresh page’.
- If a course has several workgroups and the workgroup for which you wanted to enrol is full, you have to choose another workgroup.
- The planning you made of all the old and new workgroups will show for the whole semester.
- Go to 'enrollments' in MyStudymap to check the succesfull enrolled activities.
- If you are having trouble with your exam registration, send an email before the deadline to OIC@law.leidenuniv.nl stating your student number, the exam and the failure notification.
- A workgroup/seminar will close automatically when it’s full and 5 days before it starts;
- The registration deadline for registering for any exam in uSis is 10 days before the day of the exam taking place;
- BEWARE: Once the registration period in MyStudymap has been closed, it will no longer be possible, in any way, to register for the exam or retake! Without a registration in MyStudymap you cannot take the exam.
- It is mandatory to bring your LU-Card and a valid passport or ID to the exam for verification.

no participation in an exam?
In case you decide not to participate in an exam, please do not forget to deregister at the latest 10 days before the exam in the Student portal > ‘Unenroll exams’. It saves the faculty of Law al lot of time and money. Thank you.
Register course in Brightspace
In MyStudymap, for each course you have the option to register only for the course environment in Brightspace.
For guest students, registered at another University, who wants to take one or more (minor)courses at Leiden University it's NOT possible to register via MyStudymap.
Guest students can and must only register in uSis for courses and exams. They have to take the following steps.
Note: Students of LLM Advanced study programmes are not required to register for courses.
Education and exams
Registration for lectures, workgroups and exams for the first semester, will open medio July en for the second semester it is medio December.
The registration for retakes opens 30 days before the day of the retake at 13:00 hours.
Please read and follow carefully the instructions below.
- Check the course descriptions and the methods of instruction in the Prospectus;
- Log in to uSis, click on ‘Enroll’ and next on ‘Enroll by entering the activity/class number’ (actnr). In case of problems with your account check here.
- Check the schedules > workgroups to find the activity number. First click on 'specificatie per onderwijsactiviteit' and find the course in the search bar. Fill in the actnr. in uSis.
- You can find your schedule in MyTimetable. Click here.
- Choose the minor or courses in MyTimetable. You will find the class number below de course in MyTimetable. Enter this number in uSis.
- A workgroup/seminar will close automatically when it’s full and 5 days before it starts;
- The registration deadline for registering for any exam in uSis is 10 days before the day of the exam taking place;
- Complete your registration via your shopping cart;
- Always check your schedule in uSis to see whether your application has been successful;
- If you are having trouble with your registration, send an email before the deadline to OIC@law.leidenuniv.nl stating your student number, the activity/exam your wish to register for, and the failure notification.
- BEWARE: Once the registration period in uSis has been closed, it will no longer be possible, in any way, to register for an exam! Without a registration in uSis you cannot take the exam/retake.
- Should you decide not to participate please deregister for the exam via uSis;
- It is mandatory to bring your LU-Card and a valid passport or ID to the exam for verification.
Other subjects related to education and exams
Brightspace is the digital learning environment of Leiden Law School. For help and instructions about Brightspace check the website.
- After you registered for lectures, workgroups and/or exams, you are able to access the corresponding course in Brightspace.
- Manuals for Brightspace are available on https://studentuniversiteitleiden.screenstepslive.com/. On every Brightspace page you will find a menu-item ‘Help’.
- About 2 weeks before the start of a course, the information will be available in Brightspace.
- Log in to Brightspace with your ULCN account.
In MyStudymap is a direct link to the prospectus. The Prospectus includes:
- Course descriptions and the methods of instruction.
- The required literature. You can purchase books at reputable bookstores or online. You can purchase readers and syllabi for courses via Readersonline.
- Contact information of the secretariat and the department of a specific course.
It is mandatory to provide a valid identification document during the examination. In addition, there are rules regarding the materials that you can take with you to the exam.
Valid ID during an exam
The presence is registered at the exam. The following matters are required for this identification and thus participation at the exam:
- LU-Card and a valid ID. Please note: a copy, whether or not via a mobile or an expired ID is not accepted.
A valid ID is a valid passport, a valid driving license or identity card. If you can not show a valid identity document as mentioned above, you can not take the exam and you must leave the examination room.
Exam equipment
- pen, pencil type B or HB black, sharpener and eraser;
- law books (if necessary and permitted).
Information about study materials that may or may not be brought to examinations and information about lectures and exam access will be published in the workbook of the relevant course and / or on Brightspace. If it is permitted to take material to the exam, it must meet the following requirements:
Brought in legal texts or other material may not contain any notes. Notes do not include:
- underlining, shadings and markings with fluorescent marker;
- references to law articles;
- references to jurisprudence and other literature, provided this is explicitly permitted for a specific examination;
- "edge"words provided by the publisher of a legislative bundle.
Of course it is forbidden to smoke, to use mobile phones / iPads / tablets and such during exams.
You may qualify for an individual retake examination (oral or written) when:
- you have received a 5 at least once for the course. This grade should be scored in the current academic year or the year prior;
- all other courses belonging to the curriculum have been completed and the grades have been registered in uSis;
- you have submitted the final version of your thesis and the supervisor can declare that it will be a passing grade;
- you would have to wait at least four months for the next scheduled examination opportunity to pass the last component of the curriculum. The period between 1 July until the middle of August is not included in this calculation.
- NB. The course units entitled ‘Privatissimum’ and/or ‘Practicum’ are excluded from individual retake examinations.

If you are eligible for an individual retake you can request one by sending an e-mail to OIC@law.leidenuniv.nl stating your name, studentnumber and the particular course.
If you do not meet all the requirements, the Education Information Centre cannot give you permission for an individual retake. If you still want to apply due to special circumstances, please send a motivated request to the Board of Examiners.
The Board of Examiners will only grant an individual retake exam for extraordinary circumstances out of your control. A delay in your studies is not a valid reason to request an individual retake exam from the Board of Examiners. We advise you to consult your study advisor to get a better idea of whether or not your reasons will be accepted by the Board of Examiners.
Under certain conditions, and at the student’s request, a regular student* may retake one exam that has already been passed.
Information is provided below about the conditions to retake an exam that has already been passed.
On the grounds of Article 4.1.8 in the Course and Examination Regulations (OER in Dutch) of Leiden Law School, under certain conditions and at the student’s request, it is possible once during a bachelor’s programme, and once during a master’s programme, to retake one written (partial) exam that has already been passed with the grade 6.0 or higher Note: if you are enrolled at Leiden Law School for more than one bachelor’s or master’s programme, you are entitled to one extra retake of an exam that has been passed for each programme. If a degree programme has more than one specialisation, then only one retake of an exam that has been passed is allowed.
Retaking an exam that has already been passed is only possible under certain conditions:
- the course was passed at the first attempt of the exam during the current academic year;
- the course exam was taken for the first time in the programme;
- the e-prospectus states that it is possible to retake an exam that has been passed;
*Note: retaking an exam that has already been passed does not apply to:
- exchange students, guest students, students from another faculty at Leiden University and students enrolled in an Advanced Masters programme.
- oral exams, practical exercises, a minor or parts of a minor, assignments, and theses.
The highest grade counts. Retaking an exam that has already been passed is always done at the regular retake exam of the course component in question in the same academic year. It is therefore not possible to make other arrangements with the relevant Course Coordinator.
Do you meet the above criteria and would you like to retake an exam that you had already passed?
Important to know! Because you have already passed the first exam, you will not find the resit on MyStudymap. You can add the course on MyStudymap à Study planning via ‘Electives / extra curriculair’. Then it’s possible to enroll you for the resit. Please have a look at the exam calendar (tentamenkalender in Dutch). You will find the date when it’s possible to enroll for the resit. You can enroll for the resit from 30 days before the examination date till 10 days before the examination date.
Always check whether your exam registration was successful in MyTimetable.
When you are not allowed to retake the passed exam, you will be deregistered via an automatic (nightly) process. You will receive a message stating one of the following reasons:
- the resit is not permitted because the test date is not in the current academic year
- the resit is not permitted because the maximum number of resits for the study program has already been used
- the resit is not permitted because the (partial) exam is part of a course that is not included in the student's requirements

Exchange students at Leiden Law School
As an exchange student at Leiden Law School, you do not need to enrol yourself for courses and exams - with the exception of resits. See further details below:
Soon before the start of the semster, the Office for International Education at Leiden Law School will enrol you on all the courses you have been admitted to. You will receive an automated email in your uMail account once you are registered on a course.
Please do not try to enrol yourself in uSis for your preapproved Law courses.
Check your course enrolments
One month before the start of the semester, log into uSis and make sure you are definitely enroled on all your courses. If this is not the case, please contact Leiden Law School's incoming exchange coordinator.
In order to be able to process your exam results and issue a transcript of grades, you need to be enroled in advance for all exams and retakes. The Office for International Education at Leiden Law School will enrol you for your exams - with the exception of resits. You will receive an automated email in your uMail account once you are enroled for an exam.
Resits
If you need to do any resits, you must enrol for them yourself. The Office for International Education will not do this for you. You can register for resits via uSis.
Changes?
If there are any changes to the exams you need to take, please send an email to Leiden Law School's incoming exchange coordinator, indicating your name and student number.
Check your exam enrolments
Log into uSis and make sure you are definitely enroled for your exams well in advance. If this is not the case, please contact Leiden Law School's incoming exchange coordinator.
