Course and exam enrolment
Are you a visiting exchange student? In most cases, you do not need to enrol on courses yourself. Your faculty will do this for you. Click on your Exchange - Faculty tab for details.
Compulsory for all components
You must enrol for all components of your study programme, such as lectures, seminars and exams. This applies to both compulsory elements and elective credits. If you are not enrolled, you may not participate.
Exceptions
Are you an exchange student, are you following a pre-master programme, or are you following courses whilst being registered at another Dutch university? If so, different enrolment procedures apply. You will receive further information by email. Or for exchange students, see the information on your Exchange - Faculty tab.
Plan and enrol via MyStudymap
You can enrol via MyStudymap. In this system you can also plan your enrolments in advance. This means you can plan everything in your own time, then submit all your course enrolments in one go at the start of the enrolment period. Please note: your enrolment plan is not an actual enrolment and does not guarantee you a place.
How does it work?

Enrolment deadlines
Courses
You can find the enrolment deadlines for each course in the prospectus. For most courses, you can enrol till maximum 5 days before the course is due to start.
Exams
You must enrol for your exams at least 10 days before the exam date. If you are not enrolled, you may not participate. So don’t forget! If you miss the exam enrolment deadline, contact your Education Administration Office to find out if late enrolment is possible.
Busy periods: ticket system
During busy periods, MyStudymap makes use of a ticket system to prevent the system becoming overloaded. This works as follows:
- When you access MyStudymap, you will be put on a waiting list. You can see your place on the waiting list and an estimate of how long you will have to wait. You can also set up an email alert to notify you when it's your turn.
- Once it's your turn, you will have ten minutes in which to log in. If you don't log in, you will be allocated a new place on the waiting list.
- Once you are logged in, you can go ahead with your planning and enrolment.
Status of your enrolments
On the status screen in MyStudymap you can see if your enrolment has been successful. If so, you will be given access to the course environment in Brightspace and the course will appear in your personal timetable in MyTimetable. Please note: it can become very busy at the start of the enrolment period so you may have to wait until the next day for your enrolment to be processed.

Compulsory registration for lectures, exams, and tutorials
All Archaeology students are required to register for all lectures, tutorials, and exams. You can do this via MyStudymap. This applies to both the compulsory components as well as the study activities that you choose to complete as part of the elective programme (minor). The only exceptions to this rule are papers; you do not need to register for these.
For more information, see this page.
You will find more registration details per course in the Prospectus.
Please note: all first-year, full-time bachelor’s students are registered by Education and Student Affairs or courses starting in September and Feburary. First-year students are also registered by the education administration for the exams that take place in the first year. Please note that you will need to register yourself for potential resits.
Are you a senior student who needs to do a resit of a first year's course? Please fill out the following form:
Registration deadlines
- The registration deadline for a workgroup/lecture/seminar is 5 days before it starts and will close automatically.
- The registration deadline for any examis 10 days before the day of the exam taking place and will close automatically.

In all cases the following applies: not registered means not participating.
Planning your studies
Before the registration period opens, you can plan your studies for the coming semester in MyStudymap. Here, you can register for all courses at the same time once registration opens.
For more information on the difference between planning and registering, see this page.
Exchange students at Archaeology
As an exchange student at Archaeology, you do not need to enrol yourself for courses and exams (with the exception of resits). See further details below:
During the admissions process, a number of courses has been approved for you. In order to receive credit for courses and a transcript containing your results, your courses at Leiden University must be registered in uSis. The Archaeology Administration Office will enroll you in uSis for all preapproved Archaeology courses, lectures and workgroups.
Exchange students should not try to enrol themselves in uSis for their preapproved Archaeology courses.
Course changes
After 1 July (semester 1) / 1 December (semester 2) it is only possible to make course changes in case of a course clash. Please contact your Exchange Coordinator as soon as possible in case you encounter a course clash.
The Archaeology Administration Office will enroll you in uSis for all your preapproved Archaeology exams - with the exception of resits.
Resits
If you need to do a resit exam, please send an e-mail to the Education Office at onderwijs@arch.leidenuniv.nl and ask for a resit. The deadline for enrolling you for a resit is 11 days before the start of the resit exam.
