LDE Space & Society Honours Programme
Do you want to contribute to society and do you have affinity with space? In this programme (15 EC), you will gain the knowledge and tools to become an innovative thinker and tackle a real-world challenge in the space sector.
For students of all academic disciplines
No current knowledge on space? No problem! The LDE Space & Society Honours Programme welcomes students of all faculties, since space challenges have both technological and societal aspects. The programme is open to motivated second- and third-year bachelor’s students from LDE universities with interest in the topic.
Aim of the programme
The aim of the LDE Space & Society Honours Programme is to provide students with the knowledge and tools to become innovative thinkers, problem solvers and effective leaders in the space sector and to contribute to improving the use of space technology for the benefit of society.
The programme (15EC) consists of two courses: a lecture series and a space challenge. You will take part in lectures, sector visits, workshops and an interdisciplinary team project. The programme runs November-June.
What will I learn?
- The fundamentals of space technology, space law, space business and much more.
- How to work effectively in an interdisciplinary team of students.
- How to analyse a space sector problem or challenge from multiple perspectives and identify possible conflicts of interest.
- How to combine insights from different disciplines to design solutions.
Why an honours programme about space?
- The space sector is rapidly evolving, out of the niche of exceptional technology into a regular part of society. Most of us use space technology and space data on a daily basis (weather data, GPS).
- Space is seen as an important way to tackle climate change. It is therefore of increasing importance for students of to learn about the technological, economic and social developments that will help shape the space sector.
- The current geopolitical tensions in the world underline the importance of space: space is increasingly seen as ‘the next frontier’.
- An honours programme is the perfect place to bring together students of multiple disciplines and universities and let them work interdisciplinarily.
About us: LDE Alliance
The LDE Space & Society Honours Programme is a joint initiative by the Honours Academies of Leiden University, TU Delft and Erasmus University Rotterdam. We work together in the LDE Alliance. Our interdisciplinary centres use innovative teaching and research to solve complex societal issues.
This programme is specifically coordinated by LDE Space for Science & Society Programme. Here, the LDE universities work together to meet the challenges in the space sector and improve the use of space capabilities for societal benefit.
