Yuliia's big wish fulfilled: dissecting a calf's brain

Thanks to Make-A-Wish, Yuliia was given the opportunity to fulfil her dearest wish and learn more about her great interest: the brain. Together with her best friend, Yuliia attended a practicum in which they studied the brain of a calf.

Leiden University recently welcomed a very special guest via Make-A-Wish. Seventeen-year-old Yuliia is fascinated by the brain. This is because we use our brain to think, reason and move, among other things. Furthermore, Yuliia’s desire to learn more about the brain is driven by her illness, as she has a brain tumor herself.

Yuliia took part in a practicum led by lecturer Elianne van Egmond in the Clinical Neuropsychology course, where she had the chance to dissect a calf's brain. Calf brains closely resemble those of humans. To further fuel her curiosity, Yuliia was presented with a gift by scientific director Hanneke Hulst: Atlas van ons brein (Atlas of Our Brain). This book by Lara Wierenga has even been translated into Chinese.
