Four hundred and fifty trees for Leiden University’s 450th anniversary
Leiden and The Hague have an extra 450 trees thanks to a special campaign to mark the 450th anniversary of the Relief of Leiden and Leiden University’s foundation. Over the past few months, Stadslab Leiden has worked on an initiative to plant young trees with the residents of the two cities.
Anyone can collect a sapling to plant in their garden or in a pot on their balcony, thus creating a living memorial to our 450-year-old university.
Symbolic 450th tree
The symbolic tree number 450 was presented to Annetje Ottow, President of the Executive Board, on behalf of the university. This snowball tree (viburnum adoxaceae) can reach up to two metres in height. Stadslab found the word snowball fitting for this 450 context: the campaign has snowballed, with hundreds of participants having planted over 450 saplings.
‘Huge thanks to Stadslab for this not just this lovely 450th tree but above all this lovely campaign. It’s fantastic to see so many people joining in and planting a tree. How wonderful to be doing this together’, said Annetje Ottow, President of the Executive Board.
