First university-wide iftar brings students and staff together

Leiden University organized its first university-wide iftar, an event aimed at fostering connection and dialogue on cultural and religious diversity. This initiative was made possible by the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences, POPcorner-FSW, student association SABR, and POPcorner The Hague.

Connection through diversity

The iftar, the first meal eaten after sunset during Ramadan, provided a unique opportunity to exchange knowledge and experiences regarding the diversity of cultural and religious traditions within the university. Around 80 students of various nationalities and both religious and non-religious backgrounds came together to celebrate the evening.

Distinguished guests

Among the special guests were Rector Magnificus Hester Bijl, Vice-Deans of the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences Dr. Kristiaan van der Heijden and Prof. Bart Barendregt, and university D&I policy officer Judith Jansen. Their presence highlighted the importance of inclusion and dialogue within the university community.

An evening of connection and understanding

The evening was centered around meeting new people, fostering connections, and promoting mutual understanding. Students and staff shared personal stories and insights about the role of religion and culture in daily life and academic environments. Through conversations and shared meals, an atmosphere of openness and respect was created.

A new tradition in the making?

Given the successful turnout and positive feedback, the organizers look back on a meaningful evening with pride and hope to continue this tradition in the future.
