Three new Programme Directors at the Faculty of Science
At the start of 2025, the Faculty of Science (FWN) will take on their new roles as programme directors. Charlene Kalle, Thijs Bosker, and Maurijn van der Zee will each be responsible for one of the faculty's bachelor programmes. Their appointments are for a term of four years.
Science for Sustainable Societies
On 1 January, Thijs Bosker will become the programme director for the new bachelor’s programme Science for Sustainable Societies. Vice Dean Bart de Smit highlights the unique character of the programme: ‘It’s truly interdisciplinary.’ The programme is a collaboration between two faculties: FWN and the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences (FSW). ‘The best of both worlds,’ says De Smit. ‘This combination is exactly what’s needed to tackle the sustainability challenges of today and the future.’
Mathematics
Also starting on 1 January, Charlene Kalle will assume the role of programme director for the Mathematics bachelor programme, succeeding Martin Bright. Bright will remain responsible for the master’s programme Mathematics. He is enthusiastic about Kalle’s appointment: ‘Charlene is an excellent fit. She brings a great deal of energy, experience, and educational expertise to the position.’ Bart de Smit adds: ‘Charlene has earned her Senior Teaching Qualification and has a strong didactic vision, which will allow her to further strengthen the programme.’
Biology
On 1 February, Maureen van der Zee will take over as programme director for the bachelor’s programme Biology. He will succeed Marcel Schaaf, who has held the position since October 2022. Dennis Claessen, Director of Education at the Institute of Biology Leiden, is delighted with Van der Zee’s appointment. ‘With his extensive experience in teaching and curriculum development, Maurijn is the perfect choice to guide the Biology bachelor’s programme towards a bright future.’
