Border controls were initially only temporary measures during major events but have now become the norm. 'Schengen hasn't been fully functioning as intended since the so-called migration crisis in 2015', says Schade. He warns that freedom of movement is just one of several European fundamentals that could come under pressure from far-right influence in the coming years.
