Professor Ineke Sluiter receives Arts and Sciences Medal of Honour

On 25 November, Professor Ineke Sluiter received the Medal of Honour for Arts and Sciences in the Order of Orange-Nassau. She was presented with the medal by King Willem-Alexander.

Sluiter was awarded the Medal of Honour for her scholarly work as professor of Greek language and literature and for her services as a member of the Palace Commission, the advisory body of the Royal Palace of Amsterdam Foundation.

Mark of appreciation

Sluiter was delighted with this award. ‘If there was one thing I didn’t see coming, it was this Medal of Honour. I am very happy about it and think it is wonderful that a humanities scholar should receive this sign of appreciation. The many ways in which we try to nourish our society and all its institutions with the knowledge and insights we are able to offer are not always visible. It is wonderful that the King and Queen wanted to highlight this, and particularly heartening that this should happen during these bleak times for academia.’

About the Medal

The Medal  of Honour for Arts and Sciences is awarded annually to an individual who has demonstrated to the Royal Household and to society that he or she has particularly excelled in the field of arts and sciences.
