Atelier pilot launched: new teaching format at Leiden Law School
We’re delighted to announce a major development within the teaching and education we provide at our faculty: the launch of the Atelier pilot. Atelier will be a new teaching format within the bachelor’s programme in Law. This pilot will be run for full-time first-year tutor group students who are taking the monodisciplinary bachelor’s programme in Law. The pilot will be conducted in the 2024-2025 academic year during the third block of the first-year curriculum and is an important aspect of our innovation within the legal training we provide.
How is the Atelier pilot structured?
Atelier is a new teaching format that offers small-scale, cross-curricular education. The Atelier pilot forms part of three courses within the same block. This pilot will be run alongside lectures and seminar teaching. Besides more valuable lecturer-student contact in smaller groups, there is a focus on activating teaching methods.
- Goal: In small groups of 18 students, the Atelier pilot will contribute to establishing connections between courses and legal disciplines, developing skills and critical reflection on study material.
- Content: The Atelier pilot offers challenging education based on current affairs and socially relevant scenarios. Atelier education will consist of assignments that explore issues from a variety of perspectives, skills teaching and interdisciplinary issues.
- Duration: The pilot will last six weeks. Each week, students will attend one Atelier session lasting two hours. The Atelier pilot therefore involves two hours of teaching per week, in addition to the regular contact hours. Atelier teaching takes place on site at the KOG Building and/or the Old Observatory (Sterrewacht).
- Courses and theme: The courses participating in the pilot are: Introduction to European Law (Inleiding Europees Recht), Introduction to Administrative Law (Inleiding Bestuursrecht) and Foundations of the Law (Grondslagen van het recht). The pilot will focus on the theme of the environment.
Who is the pilot for?
The pilot will be run for full-time first-year tutor group students who are taking the monodisciplinary bachelor’s programme in Law. The tutor groups involved are 219 to 238. The students in question will receive a separate invitation to participate and register.
Why participate in this pilot?
- Students who have attended enough sessions, shown active participation in these workshops and met the requirements of the workshop assignments, will receive 0.5 bonus points per course on the written examination. The exact rules on this will be announced before the Atelier pilot begins.
- The pilot offers challenging education based on socially relevant scenarios.
- Small-scale education with more valuable lecturer-student contact.
Background
The Atelier pilot was developed as part of the launch of the new Kernvisie curriculum. Through the Kernvisie, we aim to enable more valuable lecturer-student contact, giving students the opportunity to thrive in cross-curricular areas with interdisciplinary skills teaching.
