New student accommodation in Oegstgeest a step closer

The construction of 285 student studios on land owned by Leiden University is a step closer. On Thursday, student housing organisation DUWO and the Real Estate department of the University signed the leasehold agreement for the parcel of land in the Oegstgeest part of the Leiden Bio Science Park.

The student complex will be located in the new residential area in Nieuw Rhijngeest Zuid, for which the University recently selected Dura Vermeer to develop the area. The construction of this neighbourhood is expected to start in early 2026. The building of the student accommodation will start a year earlier. The neighbourhood is characterised by soft colours, a diversity of housing types, playful elements, open spaces, attractive landscaping and lots of meeting places.

Studios

One part of the complex of 285 studios has thirteen floors, and two linked, lower blocks of four floors. There will be a large common area on the ground floor, where students can relax, study and meet up with one another. There will also be a laundry.

The studios themselves are what is known Sting studios (students in group accommodation). These are small, independent studios with their own sanitary facilities, in groups of ten to twelve studios, each group with its own shared living area and kitchen. There are also a few larger corner apartments.

Dynamic Science Park

This new complex adds to the thousand student flats that Leiden University had built last year on the Leiden Bio Science Park. Chris Suijker, Real Estate director: ‘It’s fantastic that as a University we have taken another big step in providing pleasant and affordable accommodation for young students. An important advantage of living in student accommodation is that students learn to look after themselves. You make new friends more easily, you’re independent and you develop your own identity. These flats also contribute to the dynamic Science Park that we are aiming for, where businesses, living, learning and recreation come together.’
