Leiden University fifth in SustainaBul sustainability ranking

Leiden University has secured fifth place in SustainaBul, the sustainability ranking for universities and universities of applied sciences in the Netherlands. The university took 11th place last year.

SustainaBul is the initiative of the Studenten voor Morgan student organisation. Thirty-three institutions took part in this edition. The ranking includes the categories of operational management, education, research and best practices.

The university earned 250 more points than last year. This is largely due to the publication of its Sustainability Implementation Agenda 2023-2026, which sets out clear ambitions, policies and strategies to make progress on sustainability. Leiden University has a high score for sustainability in minors. There are plenty of opportunities for students to integrate elective courses or minors on sustainability in their programmes.

The university also has a good score for sustainable research. The Liveable Planet interdisciplinary programme is a good example of an interdisciplinary programme at the cutting edge of ecology and social systems.

According to SustainaBul, Leiden University has the most room for improvement in the category of education. The creators of the ranking want to see sustainability integrated into all programmes. Steps can also be taken in terms of sustainable finance such as sustainable banking and a sustainable pension fund.
