Ilze Bot appointed professor of Cardiovascular Pharmacology
Dr Ilze Bot (LACDR) has been appointed professor of Cardiovascular Pharmacology with effect from 1 March. A recognition of her work as a scientist. 'This allows me to continue and expand my line of research within the LACDR and Leiden University.'
In her research, Bot focuses on unravelling the underlying mechanisms that cause unstable atherosclerosis. This is the underlying pathology leading to a heart attack or stroke. 'If we know more about these mechanisms, we can develop new therapies to prevent acute cardiovascular diseases. In addition, we can use this information to determine which people have an increased risk of developing unstable atherosclerosis.'
Reduce number of patients with unstable atherosclerosis
Bot hopes that with her research, the number of patients with unstable atherosclerosis can be reduced. 'In the Netherlands, around 1.7 million people suffer from some form of cardiovascular disease, including atherosclerosis. If we know what the underlying causes are, we can reduce the number of patients. The work we do can therefore be important for society.'
