Meike de Boer: ‘The word 'uh' can help track down suspects’
In the new video series 'The World of Linguistics', alumni and researchers talk about their passion for their field. PhD candidate Meike de Boer knows everything about the word ‘uh’.
De Boer: ‘I’ve done extensive research to find out how people say ‘uh’, how it differs and how consistent they are in different settings. For example, does their 'uh' sound the same in another language as it does in their native language? I have found that although the sound is different, the duration and pitch stay the same. I hope that alle the knowledge we gather within forensic linguistics can help the police track down suspects.'
