Former student Aoife in Glasgow: 'I urged Rutte to limit global warming'
Aoife Fleming attended the climate summit in Glasgow as UN Youth Delegate for the Netherlands. She recently graduated with a master’s degree in Financial Law.
'At the climate summit I followed the negotiations for example about participation’, she says from Glasgow. 'One of the provisions of the Paris Agreement is participation in climate policy, and how that will be established will be fleshed out at this summit. We also hope that in the final statement there will be a provision on the importance of youth participation. Young people all over the world are taking to the streets in huge numbers demanding higher ambitions in climate policy. It is important now that they also have a seat at the table when policy is being discussed’.
Dinner with the Dutch Prime Minister
World leaders and politicians descended in Glasgow to negotiate at the climate summit. 'Last week I dined with outgoing Prime Minister Rutte. I urged him to be more ambitious to ensure that we limit global warming to 1.5 degrees.'
In 2019, Aoife was elected as UN Youth Delegate on Sustainable Development. She represents the opinion of young people in the Netherlands at meetings like the climate summit in Glasgow and brings their views to the attention of politicians.
