Chinese athletes must perform this Olympics. Anything less than a gold is being seen as athletes being unpatriotic by furious nationalists online. Florian Schneider, director of the Leiden Asia Centre, explains the situation on BBC News.
‘To these people, Olympic medal tables are real-time trackers of national prowess and, by extension, of national dignity,’ says Schneider. ‘In that context, someone who fails at a competition against foreigners has let down or even betrayed the nation.’
