Serious Game: NATO Summit Crisis Simulation

In the context of the NATO Summit in The Hague in June 2025, the Institute for Security and Global Affairs (ISGA) at Leiden University, in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Young Atlantic Association, will organise a North Atlantic Council (NAC) Crisis Simulation.

During this serious game, Students will act as representatives of NATO Member States in a simulated NAC meeting, negotiating and responding to a rapidly evolving crisis that could escalate into an Article 5 situation.

The simulation will take place at The Hague Campus of Leiden University on 5 June and will be supervised by Professor dr. Frans Osinga & Dr. Ernst Dijxhoorn, along with military experts and members of the Permanent Representation to NATO.

Essay Competition: 'The Future of NATO'

All students enrolled in higher education institutions in the Netherlands are eligible to sign up, participants will be selected through an essay competition. To participate in the competition and serious game, please send a max. 2500 word essay, written in English, on ‘The Future of NATO’ to NATOseriousgame@fgga.leidenuniv.nl before 25 March 2025, also providing your full name, email address, your study programme (and year).

  • The best essays on ‘The Future of NATO’ will earn their writers one of the 15 available spots to participate in the serious game at Leiden University in The Hague on 5 June 2025.
  • The top essay chosen by the jury will be published in Atlantic Perspective, the periodical of the Atlantic Association.
  • The winner and runners-up will receive invitations to the Atlantic Assembly, the Young Atlantic Association’s annual event on 12 April 2025.
  • Winners of the Essay Competition will be invited to a Public Event in the margins of the NATO Summit at the World Forum.

This essay competition and simulation provide a unique opportunity for students to engage with pressing security challenges, develop negotiation skills, and interact with experts in international security and diplomacy.
