Fireside Peace Chats in collaboration with De Vierde Golf presents public screening of the film Russians at War by Canadian director Anastasia Trofimova on 26 March 2025 from 18:00 to 21:00. The screening will be at Leiden University College, Anna van Buerenplein 301, 2595 DH, The Hague and it will be followed by a panel discussion with the film's director.
The screenings will take place concurrently with the Movies that Matter film festival in The Hague which decided not to include the film in its schedule. Russians at war is a powerful anti-war documentary that shows the human aspect of suffering during wartime.
The film was shown at the Venice Film Festival and the Toronto Film Festival. By screening the film, we want to encourage artistic freedom of expression and free and open debate about prevailing war narratives. The film gives voice to Russian soldiers on the front in Ukraine and shows the fear, hopelessness of their situation, including the realisation of futility of patriotic promises.
Leaders on all sides are pushing for more weapons, more army exercises and more soldiers. This film shows the discrepancy between war propaganda and the raw ugliness of war, and it is a reminder of how important it is to work for peace.
