Join a unique discussion with a former correspondent in Israel and the Palestinian Territories for Dutch, Belgian, and American Media. Mr. Franke will discuss Journalism in War Zones—tales from Gaza, the West Bank, and Israel.
The following questions will be addressed:
How do you work as a reporter in war zones? Who can you trust, and how do you stay safe? Which tools are available for fact-checking as the fighting occurs and chaos ensues? What about the communication with different fighting factions, in this case, the IDF, Hamas, the Islamic Jihad, and other militant groups in Gaza? What are fixers, and how do they shape the reporting conditions?
Mr. Franke will also discuss European media and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict: Why do European media generally pay so much attention to this conflict? Which biases are in play in different media, and why? How do reporters balance their stories, or why do they sometimes fail to do so?
