In this event at the Great Auditorium in the Academy Building, we will look at the lives and work of Leiden University staff during the Second World War, in particular Professor Paul Flu. Speeches will be given by university historian Pieter Slaman, researcher Adriënne Baars and Gin Sanches, who conducted research on Paul Flu’s life. Rector Magnificus Hester Bijl will say a few words of welcome. The event is free to attend and is open to anyone from within and outside the university with an interest in the topic.
Originally from Suriname, Paul Christiaan Flu was a brilliant tropical doctor, who in 1938 rose to the position of Rector Magnificus of Leiden University. However, the war brought his high-flying career to an abrupt end: his son was murdered and he himself was imprisoned in a concentration camp.
