Quality education
During this first knowledge café, we will share insights from research on what 'good teaching’ is and how you can use that knowledge in your education. We will discuss what research can teach us about our own teaching. In these regular higher education knowledge cafés, various educational themes will be highlighted.
For whom?
Anyone who works or studies at Leiden University and is interested in research into higher
education. If you are curious about what educational research can mean for your own
(teaching) practice, you are more than welcome, whatever function or role you have.
What can you expect?
In the novel Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, Robert Pirsig states the following about quality in general:
'Quality - You know what it is, yet you don't know what it is. But that's self-contradictory. But some things are better than others, that is, they have more quality. But when you try to say what the quality is, apart from the things that have it, it all goes poof!'
This seems to be no different for teaching. Defining quality is by no means an easy task and evaluating quality regularly causes controversy. Dr. Mario de Jonge (educational scientist at ICLON), descended into the depths of the literature and will share his findings by way of introduction to our conversation. What is quality of teaching? How is this evaluated? And what can chocolate chip cookies and ghost teachers teach us about this topic?
We will discuss this in groups. We explore what this means for our own teaching practice and education policy practice. And how can you relate this to your own experiences at Leiden University?
Participation
Come to the first Higher Education Knowledge Café to exchange ideas with fellow lecturers, students, educational support staff and policymakers based on insights from scientific research.
Participation in the knowledge café is free of charge. We ask the participants to participate in the discussions, so that we can make optimal use of all available expertise.
