The INVISIHIST research project invites all faculty and students to a special lecture hosted on Thursday, 14th March with Dr Mark Jones, Assistant Professor at University College Dublin. Registration for this special event is not required.
As part of the 2023-2024 INVISIHIST lecture series, Mark’s lecture will explore the demise of the Weimar Republic, Germany’s first democracy.
Since the late 2010s, the term “Weimar conditions” or “Weimarer Verhältnisse,” has been increasingly used as a metaphor for the global crisis facing contemporary liberal democracy. For some, the term is reassuring: thinking about the details of the collapse of Germany’s first democracy is an appealing reminder that the contemporary world does not face conditions identical to those of the Weimar Republic. In this talk, historian Mark Jones will challenge this narrative of reassurance. Exploring the parallels and echoes that exist between Weimar’s demise and the current global polycrisis, this talk will focus upon ‘Weimar subjectivities’ and the loss of three kinds of power: the power of the imperial subject; the power of the male subject; and the power of the knowing subject.
About the speaker
Mark Jones is Assistant Professor in History at University College Dublin. He is among the leading English language Historians of modern Germany and a recognized authority on the history of the Weimar Republic. He is the author of Founding Weimar and 1923, both of which were also published in German.
Organisation
This event is organised by the Invisible History of the United Nations and the Global South (INVISIHIST) research project under the leadership of Dr Alanna O’Malley, Associate Professor at Leiden University’s Institute for History. INVISIHIST looks to reveal and unravel the invisible histories of the UN, transcending the dominant Western perspective to recover the historical agency of Global South actors. The research will investigate how the UN has both facilitated and limited their role in shaping global order from 1945-1981. The project is funded by the European Research Council and is available to listen to on the Global Orders podcast.
