This will be our first symposium of the year and it will be focused on connections between us and our heritage or our cultural roots. There will be 5 speakers covering a range of different topics, so we hope you are excited to hear all about their amazing research.
The symposium will take place on November 23rd from 14:00 to 17:00 in the Reuvenshall and will be immediately followed by the next Faculty Drinks! So you can have a nice drink while maybe discussing some of these interesting topics or just relaxing after all this information.
The programme is as follows:
14:00 – 14:30 Ang li (Livestream)
Through a case study of a Chinese historical city, the lecture will highlight the impacts that historical events have on the city’s formation process. The presentation will discuss the mapping and visualizing approaches adopted to uncover the continuity and distinctions in spatial functions and morphologies over time. It will further explore the differences between modern planning theories and traditional planning approaches rooted in Chinese culture.
14:35 – 15:05 Dr. Heba Abd El Gawad (Livestream)
Dr. El Gawad will use UCL’s AHRC’s Egypt’s Dispersed Heritage project to talk about the use of comics as a counter archive to the absence of Egyptians in the archaeological record. Museums and archaeology now acknowledge the intentional exclusion of local indigenous input in knowledge production in formerly colonised areas. She argues that museums need to initially look inward to resolve their colonial, structural, and organisational models.
15:10-15:40 Dr. Theodoros Papakostas (Livestream)
Theodoros Papakostas is a PhD of classical archaeology. Commonly known as “Archaeostoryteller” (a persona allowing him to spread knowledge about the ancient times and archaeology in a simplistic and easy way), he will be talking about his first book: "How to fit all of Ancient Greece in an Elevator", and also about overcoming stereotypes within classical archaeology.

With a profound connection to the land and its people, Jorge's firsthand experiences of living in the Amazon bring to life the rich cultural heritage of the Uitoto community, making this symposium a must-attend event for a unique perspective on their ancestral roots.
