On Monday, 25 September 2023, Professor Kristin Hoganson (University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign) will lead the inaugural session of the Seminar Series on Modern North American History, jointly organized by the Roosevelt Institute for American Studies in Middelburg and the Sciences Po Center for History (CHSP) in Paris.
This is a hybrid event. It is possible to attend Professor Hoganson’s lecture in person, both at Leiden University’s Institute for History and at SciencesPo in Paris, or online, from 17:00 to 18:30 CEST.
In her talk, Professor Hoganson will introduce her most recent research project on imperialist infrastructure at the dawn of the big carbon era. She will delve into US infrastructure building in the circum-Caribbean during the early twentieth century, discussing the role of the US private sector, particularly US engineers and investors, and exploring the intersections of the public and private sectors.

About the speaker
Kristin Hoganson is a Professor of History at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, USA. She is a leading authority in US foreign relations history, with particular expertise in the history of the US empire during the long nineteenth century up to World War I. Her broad and diverse scholarship covers subjects such as imperialism, the role of masculinity in policy-making, global trade, consumer consumption, and environmental issues. Hoganson’s latest works include the brilliant book The Heartland: An American History (Penguin Press, 2019)
