In this roundtable organised by the MA International Relations degree programme, Drs Henderson, Links and Wang will consider the impacts on non-European states of Russia’s war on Ukraine. We will hear about: the impact of the grain shortage on Middle Eastern states and the perspectives of certain African states and China on the war. This is an important conversation for understanding why Russia has not received as much condemnation as its actions in Ukraine warrant. 8 months into the war, we hear far less about the “isolation” of Russia on the world stage as it has become clear that in certain geographies, this is regarded far less as a war between Russia and Ukraine but is seen instead as a proxy war between Russia and the West. Even where clearly detrimental impacts have been felt, the grain shortage, for instance, Russia has not necessarily been regarded as solely culpable. During this conversation, we will consider the role of historical relations in shaping attitudes today and seek to understand how silence can function to allow violence, even while understanding too that today’s silence may stem from historical violence.
