You are all invited to an artist talk by interdisciplinary artist Yuki Kihara, who represents Aotearoa New Zealand at this year’s Venice Biennale. The talk will take place in Auditorium 0.11, Lipsius Building, on Thursday 19 May, 13:15 to 15:00.
Yuki Kihara is an interdisciplinary artist of Sāmoan and Japanese descent whose work seeks to challenge dominant and singular historical narratives through art, dance, and curatorial practice. Kihara lives and works in Sāmoa, where she has been based over the past 11 years. In 2008, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York presented a solo exhibition of her work, entitled ‘Living Photographs’, held at the Lila Acheson Wallace Wing in the Department of Modern and Contemporary Art, featuring highlights of Kihara’s interdisciplinary art practice, followed by an acquisition of her work by the museum for their permanent collection. Kihara’s critically acclaimed exhibition entitled ‘Paradise Camp’ (2020) is currently presented at the Aotearoa New Zealand Pavilion as part of the 59th Venice Biennale. ‘Paradise Camp’ explores the intersectionality between identity politics, decolonization and climate change, with specific reference to Sāmoa’s Fa’afafine (third gender) community to which Kihara belongs. Yuki Kihara is currently also a research fellow at the National Museum of World Cultures in The Netherlands.
