Una Europa Challenge: Data Science and AI for Social Welfare

Doctoral and early-career researchers at Leiden University and LUMC: apply by 27 April to join the Una Europa Data Science and AI Challenge for Social Welfare!
Taking place from 21-25 July in Madrid, this intensive five-day programme is for researchers from all disciplines who are passionate about creating ethical and socially responsible AI solutions for social welfare.
Participants will work on real-world challenges and design AI tools that address important social issues, guided by the principles of AI for Good with a strong focus on ethics, bias, and human rights.

This is a unique opportunity to join a dynamic, inclusive learning environment guided by professors from Una Europa partner universities, experts from programme sponsor Bosch, and partners of the EU-funded project Assessment of Learning Technologies and Frameworks for Intelligent and Ethical AI (ALFIE).
Participants will:

Am I eligible to take part?
Applications are welcomed from doctoral and early-career researchers at Una Europa universities who are interested in developing ethical, responsible AI solutions for social welfare.
For example, participants could come from the following disciplines:
- Computer Science and AI specialists integrating ethical frameworks into development practices.
- Data Scientists ensuring their analyses consider social impact.
- Social Science researchers studying technology's effects on communities.
- Law researchers and legal professionals exploring AI regulations.
- Philosophy researchers with expertise in ethics and societal implications.
- Public Policy experts analysing governance frameworks.
- Design specialists focusing on human-centred approaches.
B2 level or higher English proficiency is required for full participation in the programme.
What is the cost?
Selected participants will have accommodation and meals fully covered by the course sponsors.
Leiden University and LUMC participants will have their travel costs and a tuition fee of €127.50 covered by the Una Europa team at Leiden University.
Location
This programme is one of the academic and cultural experiences of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid Summer Courses. Taking place at the historic village of San Lorenzo de El Escorial (Madrid), the programme offers participants a unique opportunity to engage with cutting-edge knowledge while immersed in one of Spain's most significant heritage sites and a vibrant cultural experience.
Students will be accommodated from Sunday 20 to Friday 25 July, with full board (lodging and all meals) at the EXE Victoria Palace, a 4-star hotel and a former 18th-century Royal Palace.

- An updated CV (maximum of 2 pages).
- A motivation letter (one page).
- Your university affiliation and contact details.
Academics from your university will review the applications and allocate places based on uniform criteria agreed upon by all participating Una Europa universities. Selected candidates will be notified no later than 7 May 2025.
