Sabine Luning (1959-2025)
It is with great sadness that we share the news that our dear colleague, Sabine Luning, passed away on Thursday, 6 March 2025, at the age of 65.
Sabine was Associate Professor at the Institute of Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology (CADS). She began her career at Leiden University in the 1990s and was an integral part of CADS for decades.
In recent years, Sabine focused her research on social aspects of mining in Burkina Faso, Ghana, Suriname, French Guyana, and Canada. She was drawn to questions related to social relations, power dynamics and the organizational culture of development initiatives.
Sabine not only left her mark through what she studied, but also by how she worked with others. She was a tireless connector, always seeking out collaborations and building new partnerships. Within our institute, she was an unmissable presence. Her warmth and generosity of spirit reached across generations. She was a beloved colleague, a tireless mentor, and a dear friend.
Sabine was a remarkable human being and will be deeply missed. We wish her loved ones strength at this difficult time.
The funeral will take place on Friday 14 March at 15.15.
