LUGO Sustainable Master Thesis Award is Open for Submissions

Have you written your master thesis on a topic concerning susastainability? Then submit your thesis for the Sustainable Master Thesis Award (SMTA)

Master’s students from all disciplines are invited to apply and showcase their innovative research to global, national, and regional sustainability challenges.

Prize

The prize will consist of a prize of 500 euro, - for the winner. The nominee in the second place will receive 100 euro, while the nominee in the third place is rewarded with 50 euro, -. The rest of the Top 5 nominees will receive an honorable mention. The top three nominees will be invited to the award ceremony, which will take place around January 2025. The nominees will be asked to prepare a short presentation of no more than 10 minutes for the ceremony. 

Conditions and criteria

Do you think you have what it takes to win the SMTA? There a few conditions:

  • Only students who have submitted their master theses are allowed tot participate
  • You should submit your thesis in pdf-format.
  • It should contain:  An accessible written abstract of up to 500 words about the study and a reflection of up to 500 words demonstrating the innovative nature,social/environmental/governmental implications and sustainability of research conduct of the master's thesis (with a clear link to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals).  
  • Your thesis was written in the academic year 2023-2024
  • The deadline for participation is November 1st

About the LUGO

This award, initiated by the Leiden University Green Office (LUGO), recognises exemplary theses written by Leiden University master's students on any topic related to sustainability. The LUGO strives to encourage students’ research into sustainability by awarding high-quality master's theses written on sustainability topics.

The Leiden University Green Office (LUGO) is working hard to make Leiden University more sustainable. LUGO has two main objectives:  

  1. Structurally integrate sustainability in Leiden University’s education, research, and facilities.
  2. Foster a culture of sustainability in the community of staff and students at Leiden University.

We are the hub in Leiden where students and staff members cooperate to make our University more sustainable!
