Vacancy Student mentor - BSc Security Studies

As the Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs, we find it important that all our students feel integrated in our student community and supported by their programme. To ensure this, for the past years we have run a mentoring programme for first-year students at our BSc Security Studies. To be able to organise this mentoring programme for the coming academic year as well, we are looking for enthusiastic and engaged student mentors who would like to introduce our students to the world of the university, the faculty, their studies, and The Hague.

At the BSc Security Studies we would like to organise three main events during the semester for all mentor groups. You help with the planning and organisation of these events. Besides these bigger events, you are responsible for hosting at least three sessions for your own group of around 30 first-year students. These sessions focus on guiding students through university life, helping them to gain some study skills, and enhance their wellbeing. In addition, you give advice and answer questions about studying, exams, (digital) systems, the culture and community of the programme, potential choices to be made further in the programme, and student life.

Profile

  • (Upcoming) second- or higher-year students Security Studies with good study results and a strong affinity with the programme;
  • Is enthusiastic, with a positive attitude, and strong motivational skills; 
  • With good communicative skills in English; 
  • Has strong organisational skills, both online and offline; 
  • Has empathy, helping others, inclusivity, and diversity as core values 
  • Preferably has experience with guiding groups (e.g., as a substitute teacher, ‘bijlesdocent’ or exam trainer); 
  • Is available for 2-6 hours per week between 16 August 2024 and 1 February 2025;
  • Since the training programme will be held on Friday 16 August and Monday 26 August from 13:00-18:00 hrs, it is mandatory to be in The Hague on one of those days;
  • Has a valid work permit in The Netherlands;
  • Has a Dutch Health insurance.

Tasks and responsibilities:

  • Helping with the organisation of three big events for all of the mentor groups and students during the first semester (block 1 and 2);
  • Organising and planning at least three smaller mentor group meetings during the semester;
  • Preparing and chairing these meetings;
  • Answering practical questions from your mentees;
  • Supporting the students from your mentor group with connecting to each other, the study programme and faculty;
  • Being the point of contact for your mentees, and being able to refer them to the appropriate support, department or procedure.
