Update on internal and external cameras at KOG

6 February 2024

At the end of 2023, the old surveillance cameras in and around Leiden Law School’s Kamerlingh Onnes Building (KOG) were replaced. The necessary security and privacy audits were carefully performed as local residents are also an interested party in this case. The cameras will be switched on from Wednesday 7 February onwards.

Studying and working in a safe environment

Leiden University uses surveillance cameras to contribute to the security of students, staff and property in its buildings across Leiden and The Hague. Additional measures are sometimes necessary in order to guarantee safety. The university aims to create and maintain an open community that allows students, teaching staff and other employees to study and work in a safe environment.

Camera images

Certain live camera images are viewed by the KOG’s receptionists and security staff. Immediate action can then be taken in the event of an emergency. Other images from the surveillance cameras can only be viewed by a limited number of colleagues authorised for this purpose in the event of serious threats and incidents. The camera images will be stored on a secure internal server and automatically replaced with more recent images after 28 days.

Privacy

Leiden University is aware that surveillance cameras infringe on the privacy of students, staff and visitors. For that reason, a Data Protection Impact Assessment was carried out before these measures were introduced and further measures have been taken to guarantee an adequate level of privacy.
