Vacancy: Student mentor Master Public Administration
Job description
For the Master Public Administration, we are looking for an enthusiastic and committed student mentor to familiarise new master’s students with university life, as well as studying and living in The Hague. The student mentor is responsible for building a student community within and across their respective specialisation; Economics and Governance, International and European Governance and Public Management and Leadership.
You are a first point of contact for the new cohort of (pre-)master's students. You organise activities to familiarise students and help them feel welcome, but also specialisation-related meetings, social gatherings and other events. You inform them on the educational facilities and systems, student wellbeing and career preparation. You will also represent your specialisation in information and recruitment activities, support the student ambassador, and help answer questions of prospective students.
You will coordinate your activities with the specialisation coordinator. You maintain close contacts and work together with the student mentors of the other specialisations and masters within the faculty, the student members of the programme committee of the masters (MOLC) and the study association B.I.L.
Profile
- Active registration for the Master Public Administration from (at least) September 2023;
- Contagiously enthusiastic to connect students to each other and the programme, faculty and university (community building);
- Good communication skills and command of English;
- Organisationally and digitally competent;
- Works independently and takes initiative;
- Empathetic and helpful towards fellow students;
- Values inclusiveness and diversity;
- Preferably experience in guiding groups (e.g. teaching or training);
- Available between 1 August 2023 and 31 January 2024 for approx. 5 hours per week;
- Prepared to travel to Campus The Hague,
- Willing to participate in trainings provided by ICLON and faculty on August 28th;
- Legally able to work in the Netherlands (you will need a Dutch health insurance).
Tasks and responsibilities
- Motivate your students and connect them to the programme, faculty and university;
- First point of contact for practical and other questions from your mentor group;
- Plan regular contact moments with your mentor group;
- Refer students to relevant support, department or procedure;
- Offer study-related and social activities based on students’ needs, and;
- Organise events in cooperation with internal and external relations, e.g. on career and thesis.

- Responsibility and experience in mentoring groups;
- Becoming part of a network of student mentors who can support and learn from each other;
- Supervision from a study adviser from the Institute of Public Administration;
- Compensation in accordance with the collective labour agreement of Leiden University, including holiday allowance and an end-of-year bonus.
