As the programme Crisis and Security Management, we find it important that all our students feel integrated in our student community and supported by their programme, especially now that we can welcome all students to our campus for the first time in over two years. To ensure this, we run a mentoring programme for all CSM students. To be able to organize this mentoring program for the coming academic year, we are looking for enthusiastic and engaged student mentors (4 to 6 hours per week).

As a student mentor, you will support teachers with their education, organising Q&A sessions and feedback moments. You will also guide the new master’s students of one track of Crisis and Security Management: Cyber Security Governance, Governance of Crisis, Governance of Radicalism, Extremism and Terrorism, War & Peace Studies and Intelligence and National Security. You are a first point of contact for your track.
In addition you will organise informative activities, course or specialization-related meetings, prepare Q&A sessions, and other events. You inform students and teachers on the educational facilities and systems, but also student wellbeing initiatives and career services. This is especially important, because most of our new students are unfamiliar with our campus and student community due to online education the last two years. You will coordinate your activities with the master coordinator, whom you will support where necessary. You also maintain close contacts and work together with the student mentors of the other specialisations. As a mentor, you will be registered as a student-assistent and receive compensation accordingly (± 14 euros an hour).

Profile of a student mentor:

• Student with a strong affinity to their study programme; Master of Crisis and Security Management;  
• Possesses strong communication skills and acts diplomatically and with integrity; 
• Presents themself as helpful, accessible and flexible to fellow students; 
• Is preferably experienced in guiding groups (e.g. teaching or training);
• Has strong organisational skills, online and offline; 
• Is assertive, takes initiative, and has a hands-on work ethic; 
• Values inclusiveness and diversity; 
• Enrolled at Leiden University Master of Crisis and Security Management until 1 January 2023 
• Available between 15 August 2022 and 1 January 2023, for 4 - 6 hours a week. Since the training program will be held during the week of 29 August, it is mandatory to be in The Hague that week. 
• Legally able to work in the Netherlands;

Tasks and responsibilities:

• Providing support to the teachers of your specific track; 
• Creating a student community within your track; 
• Support the students within your track with connecting to each other, the study programme and faculty; 
• Assisting your track coordinator; 
• Answering practical questions; 
• Organising and planning of meetings for your track; 
• Preparing and chairing these meetings; 
• Point of contact for the students in your track, when you come across any difficulties experienced by group members you refer them to the appropriate support, department or procedure.
