Study associations

A study association is a good way to combine study-related activities with pleasure. Every faculty has one or more study association.

Many study programmes have their own study association. For more information take a look under the faculty tab, or speak to the administration of your study programme.

Study associations are for students from a particular degree programme and focus on the academic aspects of student life. Students who are members of a Study Asociation support each other during their study period at Leiden, and organise course-related activities, such as lectures, seminars, field trips or excursions.

Study association T.W.I.S.T.

T.W.I.S.T. is the study association for students of Linguistics in Leiden, and everyone who takes courses from the linguistics department. We are an active association that organizes both study related events, like lectures, an annual linguistic conference and a career event, but we also organize many events that are not directly related to our studies, like going out for drinks, parties, movie nights, excursions, the celebration of holidays like Sinterklaas and Halloween and so much more. We also have our own magazine, the Twister, with many interesting and fun linguistic content.

Get to know your fellow students

If you want to get an impression of T.W.I.S.T. and the activities we organise, have a look at our website (www.studieverenigingtwist.nl). You can also find us on Facebook and Twitter

Attending the activities of T.W.I.S.T. helps you to get to know your fellow students, and to share your passions for language and linguistics. Although Dutch is the main language of communication within our organisation, we still have many things to offer international students too. Becoming part of T.W.I.S.T. helps you to familiarise yourself with Dutch culture and language. It is also an easy way to make new friends and share practical information about courses, books and experiences. Below we highlighted some T.W.I.S.T. events that could be of special interest to you.

Buddies

Several T.W.I.S.T. master students have volunteered to become a buddy this year. International students are provided with the opportunity to make use of our ‘buddy system’. Each international student will be linked to a master student who is familiar with the university, the linguistics department and Leiden. Your buddy will help you to get around at the beginning of your education, and will try to help you with different kinds of questions you may have. You can sign up for a buddy at the buddy stand, which will be located at the same place we have drinks this afternoon.

T.W.I.S.T. Conference

Every spring T.W.I.S.T. organizes the T.W.I.S.T. conference. Undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students present their original research in a friendly atmosphere with fellow students, researchers and lecturers. In between lectures and during the breaks there are plenty of opportunities to meet and converse with fellow students, researchers and academic lecturers. The conferences have been attended by over 60 students and researchers. This year will be even more special, as it will be the 10th edition of the T.W.I.S.T. Conference.

Mother Language Dish Day

It is a T.W.I.S.T. tradition to celebrate Mother Language Day with a dinner. Members are asked to bring a homemade dish that is connected to the area where their mother language (or a language they would like to be their mother language) is spoken. It is a real feast!

Become a member of T.W.I.S.T.!

All in all there are many reasons to join us and become a member of T.W.I.S.T.! Membership costs you only €20,- a year. You can find the registration form here. You can return this to one of the T.W.I.S.T. board members or send it to our post address. You can also sign up by sending an e-mail to bestuur@studieverenigingtwist.nl.

We are also always available on this e-mail address for any questions you may have concerning our association.
