Safe use of IT

  • Make sure that your home computer, mobile phone and tablet are updated and have good security software. You can download free anti-virus software, for example MS Security Essentials and Avira Anti Virus, or purchase affordable anti-virus software via SURFspot.
  • Use a trusted and secure (wifi) network.
  • Be alert for phishing and fake emails. If you receive an unexpected email or an email from an unfamiliar sender, do not click on any links, open any attachments or enter any details. The university will never ask you for your passwords by email. If you think you have received a phishing email, report it in the helpdesk portal.
  • Use OneDrive to save and share files safely.
  • Close the browser completely after having been logged in. Do not save your passwords in your browser.

ICT services at Leiden Observatory

The Astronomy bachelor's programme is located at the Oort Building and the Huygens Laboratory as part of the Leiden Observatory. In addition to the ICT services provided by Leiden University, Leiden Observatory offers separate services used by Astronomy bachelor's students.

Email

Astronomy bachelor's students will get a Leiden Observatory email address in addition to the uMail address. The Leiden Observatory mailbox may be managed through webmail. More information on the Leiden Observatory mailservers and help with your e-mail account can be found at the Computer Documentation Wiki.

Network, hardware and software

Leiden Observatory uses a different network and different hard- and software than other locations of Leiden University. Therefore, Leiden Observatory is supported by a separate department. In case of problems with the network, your computer, software or licenses, please have a look at the Leiden Observatory Computer Documentation Wiki. You may also contact the Leiden Observatory Helpdesk or visit the computer group (HL407).
