Membership OIKOS
All Research Master students are required to enrol in one of the Dutch research schools. OIKOS is the National Research School in Classical Studies in the Netherlands and welcomes all students enrolled at one of the universities participating in OIKOS and whose primary interest lies with the Classics. OIKOS organises courses for Research Master students in the area of Graeco-Roman Antiquity and its reception.
Students may participate in two kinds of OIKOS activities: the courses organised within the OIKOS curriculum (10 EC is obligatory), and the meetings of the OIKOS research group(s) of their choice. All Research Master students have to participate in curriculum courses from OIKOS for at least 10 EC in the course of their studies. Membership of OIKOS is free for students; their fees are paid directly to OIKOS by their own universities. Students apply for a full membership of OIKOS via the online applications form. More information about membership and courses on offer.
Masterlanguage and sister institutions
Classics students at Leiden University can attend courses that are offered by masterlanguage. Masterlanguage is a curriculum of courses offered annually to MA students in several languages (among others, classical Greek and Latin). For Classics the courses concern Epigraphy in Greece and Rome Participating students sign up for masterlanguage courses while being enrolled in their own local master programme at the masterlanguage website.
Students are also allowed to take courses at other academic universities. Students can choose from all courses on offer both in Leiden and at the sister institutions. As a result, students benefit from the expertise of many universities. An overview of all disciplinary courses (Greek and Latin literature and linguistics and cultural-historical courses) is available on the OIKOS website.
For students in Classics at Leiden University it is not obligatory to attend courses at other universities. If students do choose to attend courses at the sister institutions (or abroad), the maximum of EC for Master students that is acquired at another university is 20 EC.
