Obligations for residence permit holders
As a student residence permit holder, you have a number of obligations. If you fail to meet any of these obligations, Leiden University is required to inform the Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND), which may result in the revocation of your permit.
Sufficient funds
Throughout your stay, you must have sufficient funds for living expenses and tuition fees - see the required amounts as stipulated by the IND.
- When applying for a new student residence permit, you must demonstrate you have sufficient funds for the upcoming 12 months of your stay (or the duration of your studies if less than 12 months).
- If your study programme is longer than 12 months, Leiden University will ask you to declare you still meet the financial requirements before the start of each subsequent academic year.
Town hall registration
Throughout your stay, you must remain registered with your local town hall in the Personal Records Database (BRP). Your address in the BRP is used for all official communication. So if you change address, communicate this to your (new) municipality right away!
Your address in the BRP also demonstrates to the IND that your main residency is in the Netherlands. If you are leaving the Netherlands and won't return within 8 months, you must cancel your town hall registration - see Leaving the Netherlands.
Full-time student registration
You must remain registered as a full-time student and be actively studying at Leiden University. Part-time student registration is not permitted for student residence permit holder.
Sufficient study progress
You must obtain at least 50% of the required study credits per academic year. Pre-master students must complete the entire programme within 1 year, or within 1 semester for short pre-master programmes. Exceptions can only be made in cases of proven exceptional circumstances. Find out more about study progress requirements and exceptional circumstances.
Insurance
You are obliged to have sufficient health insurance coverage during your entire stay. If you decide to work alongside your studies, you must take out Dutch public health insurance. Make sure to familiarise yourself with health insurance requirements.
Valid permit at all times
Student residence permits are valid for the duration of your study programme plus 3 months (unless you cease to meet the criteria for your permit). Once your student residence permit expires, you no longer have the right to reside in the Netherlands, unless you have arranged residency on other grounds.
If you need more time to complete your studies, you are responsible for requesting an extension of your residence permit in good time, to avoid having a so-called residency gap.
Code of Conduct International Students
For more information on your rights and obligations as an international student in the Netherlands, see the Code of Conduct: International Students in Higher Education.
International students: be alert for telephone scams!
International students are sometimes targeted by scammers claiming to be from the IND, government agencies, banks or insurance companies. These organisations will never call you to ask for personal data. If in doubt, hang up immediately and contact the police.
