2025 is the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology—a perfect moment to dive into one of the most mind-bending areas of modern physics. From the eerie behaviour of particles to the idea that multiple versions of reality might exist side by side, quantum mechanics continues to push the boundaries of what we think is possible.
Join us for this Tuesday Talk, where Bas Hensen will take us on a journey through the past, present, and future of quantum science, sharing personal reflections, philosophical questions, and the cutting-edge research taking place right here in Leiden.

A Personal Tour of the Quantum Multiverse
What exactly is quantum theory—and could it one day be replaced? In this talk, Bas Hensen offers a unique and personal overview of the development of quantum mechanics, highlighting key milestones in both theory and experiment. He will also explore the deeper philosophical implications of the quantum multiverse, a realm in which all possible realities may exist simultaneously.
Finally, he will bring the story back to home base: the quantum experiments being conducted in Leiden that aim to test the boundaries of our understanding and help shape the future of physics.
About the speaker
Dr Ir. Bas Hensen is Assistant Professor at Leiden University, where he leads a research group exploring the foundations of quantum mechanics, with a focus on gravity. He has worked in both academia and industry, including positions at Delft University of Technology, UNSW Sydney, and the quantum start-up QphoX. He played a key role in the first loophole-free Bell test and is the recipient of multiple prestigious research grants, including an ERC Starting Grant.
