Data security in the Internet of Things
The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to the network of interconnected electronic devices. These networks enable easy access to a variety of online services and entertainment, making them highly convenient. However, this increased connectivity also brings about increased security risks that many users might not be fully aware of. Unfortunately, protecting IoT devices from security threats is challenging, as they are often limited by constraints such as energy consumption, cost, and form factor. This talk delves into the trade-offs between these constraints and the level of security in IoT networks.
About the speaker
Nele Mentens is a professor at Leiden University and at KU Leuven (Belgium). She has a master degree in electrical engineering (micro-electronics) and a PhD degree in engineering science from KU Leuven. Her research focus is on the intersection of hardware design and data security. On the one hand, she works on small and energy-efficient systems that are part of IoT networks. On the other hand, she develops high-speed hardware solutions for network security. Her work is published in over 150 journals and conferences, and resulted in three patents.
