Wij onderzoeken talen in hun historische context, met als doel de aard van de taalvariatie in het verleden te begrijpen en te verklaren in hoeverre de socioculturele context van vroeger heeft bijgedragen aan het vormen van de taalvariatie en taalverandering.

De plaats van Europese staten en instellingen in de wereldpolitiek staat centraal in deze pijler.

Den Haag, multiculturele en meertalige stad bij uitstek, vormt een uitdaging voor taalkundigen. Maar hoeveel talen er worden gesproken, is niet bekend. Ingrid Tieken-Boon van Ostade probeert daar achter te komen door de sprekers op te zoeken en ze te interviewen over hun moedertaal.
